A Sri Lankan Tamil has been named foreign journalist of the year at the British Press Awards in London
JS Tissainayagam was arrested in 2008 and sentenced to 20 years in jail for inciting racial disharmony in his magazine. He was bailed in January.
US President Barack Obama mentioned Mr Tissainagayam last year as an example of reporters jailed for their work.
Mr Tissainayagam denies supporting violence. International human rights groups had campaigned for his release.
The chairman of the British Press Awards judges, Bob Satchwell, told the BBC Sinhala service: "There is obviously concern about journalism in Sri Lanka and some other parts of the world.
"What we hope we will do in highlighting someone's position in this way is perhaps put pressure on governments in whichever country the journalist might reside to get the journalist released.
"What we always try to argue for is freedom of expression, therefore the freedom of the press, and that journalists should not be harassed and maltreated in this way."
Dangers
Last September, Mr Tissainayagam was given an award for courageous and ethical journalism by the Paris-based group Reporters Without Borders.
On Tuesday, Reporters Without Borders appealed to Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa to publicise the results of investigations into the disappearance of another journalist who vanished two months ago. It notes that senior officials are still implying that Prageeth Eknaligoda staged his own disappearance and alleges that the police have shown "no interest" in finding him alive.
"We urge the president to provide credible information about what happened to him," Reporters Without Borders said. Media rights groups say Sri Lanka is one of the most dangerous places for journalists to work. They accuse the authorities of intimidating and harassing journalists critical of the government's policies. Official figures show that nine journalists have been killed and more than 25 assaulted in the past four years in Sri Lanka. The government says it has nothing to do with either the killings or the attacks on journalists.

Lederen av British Press Awards dommere, Bob Satchwell, fortalte BBC Sinhala tjenesten: "Det er åpenbart bekymret journalistikk i Sri Lanka og andre deler av verden.
"Det vi håper vi vil gjøre i utheving noens posisjon på denne måten er kanskje legge press på regjeringer i hvilken land journalisten kan oppholde å få journalisten løslatt.
"Det vi prøver alltid å argumentere for er ytringsfriheten, derfor pressefriheten, og at journalister ikke bør trakassert og mishandlet på denne måten."
Farer
Sist september ble Mr Tissainayagam gitt en pris for modig og etisk journalistikk av den Paris-baserte gruppen Reporters Without Borders.
Tirsdag til Reporters Without Borders appellerte til Sri Lankas president Mahinda Rajapakse offentliggjøre resultatene av undersøkelsene til forsvinningen av en annen journalist som forsvant for to måneder siden.
Det påpeker at høytstående embetsmenn er likevel antyde at Prageeth Eknaligoda iscenesatte sin egen forsvinning og påstår at politiet har vist "ingen interesse i å finne ham i live.
"Vi oppfordrer presidenten til å gi troverdig informasjon om hva som skjedde med ham, sier Reportere uten grenser.
Media menneskerettighetsgrupper sier Sri Lanka er en av de farligste stedene for journalister å jobbe.
De anklager myndighetene for truende og sjikanerende journalister kritiske til regjeringens politikk.
Offisielle tall viser at ni journalister har blitt drept og mer enn 25 angrep i de siste fire årene i Sri Lanka.

பிரிட்டிஷ் பத்திரிகையாளர்கள் சங்கத்தின் இந்த ஆண்டுக்குகான சிறந்த வெளிநாட்டு செய்தியாளர் விருது இலங்கையின் தமிழ் ஊடகவியலாளரான ஜே எஸ் திசைநாயகத்துக்கு வழங்கப்பட்டுள்ளது.
திசைநாயகம் நடத்திவந்த பத்திரிகையில் இன நல்லிணக்கத்துக்கு குந்தகம் ஏற்படும் வகையில் கட்டுரைகளை எழுதி வந்தார் எனக் கூறி 2008 ஆம் ஆண்டு கைது செய்யப்பட்டு 20 ஆண்டுகள் சிறை தண்டனை விதிக்கப்பட்டார்.
இந்த ஆண்டு ஜனவரி மாதம் அவர் ஜாமீனில் விடுவிக்கப்பட்டார்.
வன்முறையை தான் ஆதரித்ததாக கூறப்படுவதை திசைநாயகம் மறுத்துள்ளார். அவர் விடுவிக்கப்பட வேண்டும் என மனித உரிமை அமைப்புகள் செயற்பாடுகளை முன்னெடுத்து வருகின்றன.
கடந்த செப்டம்பர் மாதம் தைரியமாகவும் தார்மீக முறையிலும் தனது பத்திரிகையாளர் பணியைச் செய்துவந்ததாக கூறி பாரிஸை தலைமையிடமாகக் கொண்டு செயற்படும் எல்லைகளில்லா ஊடகவியலாளர்கள் அமைப்பு திசைநாயகத்துக்கு விருது வழங்கியது.

"பிரிட்டிஷ் ஊடகத்துறையை ஒப்பிட்டு பார்க்கும் போது இலங்கையில் ஊடகத்துறையினர் மிகவும் கஷ்டமான சூழலில் பணியாற்றுகிறார்கள்" என்று பிரிட்டிஷ் பத்திரிகையாளர்கள் சங்கத்தின் ஆசிரியர்கள் குழுவின் இயக்குநரான பாப் டாட்ச்வெல் கூறுகிறார்.
இலங்கை போன்ற நாடுகளில் "தங்களது பணிக்காக செய்தியாளர்கள் துன்புறுத்தப்படுகிறார்கள், கைது செய்யப்படுகிறார்கள் சில வேளைகளில் அதைவிடவும் மோசமாக நடத்தப்படுகிறார்கள்" என்றும் கூறும் பாப் டாட்ச்வெல், அதை மனதில் வைத்துதான் உலகம் முழுதும் உள்ள பத்திரிகையாளர்களிடையே இந்த விருதுக்கு பொருத்தமானவர் யார் என்பதை தேர்தெடுக்கிறோம் என்று பிபிசியிடம் தெரிவித்தார்.
இலங்கையிலும் உலகின் வேறு பல பகுதிகளிலும் இருக்கும் ஊடகவியலாளர்கள் குறித்து தாங்கள் கவலையடைந்துள்ளதாகவும் பிரிட்டிஷ் பத்திரிகையாளர் சங்கம் தெரிவித்துள்ளது.
அப்படியான ஒரு நிலையில் இருக்கும் ஒரு பத்திரிகையாளருக்கு விருது வழங்குவது மூலம், அந்தந்த நாடுகள் மீது, சிறைபடுத்தப்பட்டிருக்கும் ஊடகவியலாளர்களை விடுவிக்க ஒரு அழுத்தத்தை ஏற்படுத்துகிறது என்றும் அந்த சங்கம் கூறுகிறது.
இலங்கை ஊடகவியலாளர்கள் பணியாற்றுவதற்கு ஒரு ஆபத்தான இடம் என்று ஊடக உரிமைகளுக்கான அமைப்புகள் கூறுகின்றன.
அரசின் கொள்கைகளை விமர்சிப்பவர்கள் அச்சுறுத்தப்பட்டு, துன்புறுத்தப்படுகிறார்கள் என்று அவை இலங்கை அரசின் மீது குற்றஞ்சாட்டுகின்றன.
கடந்த நான்கு ஆண்டுகளில் இலங்கையில் 9 ஊடகவியலாளர்கள் கொல்லப்பட்டுள்ளனர், 25 பேருக்கு மேல் தாக்கப்பட்டுள்ளனர் என்று அதிகாரபூர்வத் தகவல்கள் கூறுகின்றன.
ஆனால், ஊடகவியலாளர்கள் கொல்லப்படுவது அல்லது தாக்கப்படுவது போன்றவற்றில் தமக்கு ஏதும் பங்கில்லை என இலங்கை அரசு கூறுகிறது.
